A capacitor with a relatively high capacitance, and relatively low voltage rating, supplies energy nearly at full voltage to the start winding during a short time interval - in some cases just a few milliseconds - then remains in the circuit during the entire run cycle. In this case, a squirrel-cage motor uses a single winding and a capacitor to avoid the shortcomings of a three-phase motor as a starting motor. Because the capacitor is not connected in series with the start winding, rotation is not reversed by simply flipping the winding connection. A split-phase control circuit for capacitor-commutated motors has been used for many years in video tape and tape players to avoid the start delay of a full-pulse shaded pole motor. However, it is now limited to lower speed motors. In general, capacitor-commutated motors are limited in speed due to the need for a higher-frequency than conventional DC-start squirrel cage motor.
Most conventional induction motors are started by applying a sudden current spike to the start winding. For this purpose, the winding is connected in series with a capacitor. The current is usually supplied by a resistor in series with the capacitor. The resistor is low-pass filtered to allow the spikes to reach full current before the capacitor begins to discharge. By applying a short DC pulse to the start winding, the battery can be connected directly to the windings, avoiding the capacitor. In practice, no current detectors are connected directly to the start winding, as the capacitor is connected to the winding directly with a fuse or other current-level control. Current is sensed somewhere else in the circuit. d2c66b5586
