This merger eliminated the true rival to Warner Bros. Records, and gave way to Warner Bros. Records. This left Hanson with a major label. It also made it difficult for the band to continue as a cohesive unit. Therefore, by the end of 1997, the band split in two, with one group going to a major label (Universal), and the other to a smaller label (C&T). This gave the latter group a chance to gain a new lease on life.

Prisoners were used in prisons in many ways before the 1900s and were often treated like animals. Prisons were considered no different than breeding farms, with prisoners being treated as livestock. Prisoners were also sometimes called “mules” and forced to plow the fields and herd the cattle. The modern-day prison farm is a legacy of the convict era. This system of prison labor was extremely dehumanizing. For example, convicts who worked the fields were housed in tents or shacks and fed a barely edible diet. Although they were allowed to bring their own clothes and bedding, they were often subjected to extremely cold weather and were unable to keep themselves warm.

The workhouses were an improvement, and the conditions in which prisoners were held were mostly humane. However, the workhouses were not intended to be places of punishment, and the fact that prisoners were not allowed to leave the workhouses to do useful work led to overcrowding.
