Microsoft distributes fixes in service packs. Service packs keep a product current. They include hotfixes and software updates. Service packs may also include system administration tools, drivers, and additional components. These updates and components are conveniently bundled for easy downloading.Service packs are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that are in previous service packs, together with any new fixes. You do not have to install a previous service pack before you install the latest one. For example, you do not have to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) before you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is an IDE that provides a graphical interface for connecting and working with MS SQL server. It was launched with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and is used for configuring, managing, and administering all components within Microsoft SQL Server.

Hi Geoff, I guess technically if the only access to SQL Server is the server itself and there are no connections from other machines just having the server level license should be sufficient. Take a look at this document for more info on SQL 2005 licensing: -b514-48ab-93eb-61377df9c5c2/SQLServer2005Licensingv1.1.doc

In the company that I was recently hired, there is a SQL Server 2K5 Enterprise Edition installed on the server. Another DBA instructed me to download and install SSMSE on my computer. I am supposed to administer the SQL 2K5 and I am new in 2K5. I have worked with 2K and EM and QA for years. Question is that should I continue with SSMSE and learn it Or use SSMS If SSMS how can I download it Where should I look for it
The full version of SQL Server Management Studio is bundled with all commercial versions of SQL Server 2005. The Express edition is a free download that can be used to administer SQL Server 2005 and older. The latter was intended for use with SQL Server Express edition.
I have a SQL2005 Enterprise Edition installed on my server. If I use the same disk, can install the SSMS on my local Is it possible to install just the SSMS Do I need a license for this installation
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is the free, easy-to-use, lightweight version of SQL Server 2005. SQL Server Express is a powerful and reliable data management product that delivers rich features, data protection, and performance for embedded application clients, light Web applications, and local data stores. SQL Server Express, which can be downloaded from the following link, is free to download, free to redistribute, and easy for new developers to use immediately.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) is a free, redistributabl version of SQL Server 2005 that you can download. The SQL Server Express download provides users with the right to install and use SQL Server Express with your applications or development projects. However, for you to be able to redistribute SQL Server Express, you must register for the right to redistribute SQL Server with your applications. You can register from the following link:
Yes, you can use SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer to connect to a database in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Since SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is installed as a named instance, you simply use the name of the SQL Server 2005 instance when connecting to it from SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer. By default the name of the instance of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is SQLExpress. To connect to it from SQL Server 2000 Query Analyzer, simply include the name of the instance after the server name.
All the features of Express but with the memory limit at 3GB and no limit on database size. Also includes backup-log shipping, management studio, SQL Agent/job scheduling, full-text search, import/export and business intelligence & enterprise management tools. Prices around 2,700 per-processor or 110 per-client.
Just got put in charge of a big web project. All I know is the web server is running MS SQL 2005, so I need something comparable to test locally. I figure developer edition is my best bet because it offers everything that the enterprise edition does, but is for development purposes only.
As already pointed out, the developer edition is no longer available. See here for a brief overview of the differences between the different editions of SQL Server. SQL Server Express should be fine to get started with. If you have an MSDN subscription, you can just download the edition in-use on the web server.
I recently ran into a production instance of SQL Server 2005 SP2 (Build 3042) that is running in a two node, single instance fail-over cluster, running on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. As you may be aware, this entire stack is out of Mainstream support from Microsoft (both the OS and SQL Server). The objective is to be able to migrate a single, important database from this cluster to a new server running SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU3 on top of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Based on previous experience moving from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008, I was pretty sure that we would need to install a newer build of SQL Server 2005 on the cluster (at least SQL Server 2005 SP2 CU5) in order to be able to establish a database mirroring partnership from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 or greater.
Since I have a pretty decent test lab of machines on a Windows domain down in my basement, I decided to do some testing before I made any rash decisions. I had to look around a bit to find an x64 Windows Server 2003 R2 disc, along with an x64 SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition disc. After getting Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 installed on an actual physical machine, I had to download and install the chipset and NIC drivers, and then install about 150 updates from Windows Update to get the OS fully patched. 153554b96e
