There's a fair amount of bravery required in handling calls on an N8. Symbian S60 5th edition doesn't come with true dual-SIM (or even micro-SIM) support and the standard foldable keyboard doesn't feature the necessary hardware. The Nokia N8, however, is the first smartphone we've tested with a true dual-SIM,, but it's not without its flaws - the first one is that the camera will frequently be obstructed by the second sim card, which is particularly noticeable when snapping those hyper-critical selfie photos. Put simply, the number keys could do with a little refinement, and the space bar is hit-and-miss when the phone is closed tightly.
The display isn't the N8's biggest draw card, but it's clear and sharp with vivid color reproduction - almost shockingly so considering the low native-dip setting of the 13.5-megapixel Carl Zimmer's camera. And thats compared to the Symbian 'BlackBerry in all but name' - which means that even at 2.4 inches wide, it was thicketed with buttons and UI sliders - rather than one of the smartphone's main selling points: the attractive, curved-edge design and fantastically thick Gorilla Glass front. But by taking the premium design language of, say, an Apple Inc. iPhone, Nokia has created a range of slick, well-conceived and perfectly functional devices; yet it seems the N8 buys into the general rule of thumb that Symbian is 'low-end stuff'.
I've managed to get almost a year out of an N8. It was my primary phone when I used a computer for writing this story, but when I needed an internet connection, I would pull out the local sim card and use the 3G-equipped Nokia N5. I could snuggle the N8 in when the call-hogging phone needed a proper library of music to accompany its many hours of audio-video playback: 4GB (with microSD expansion) is enough for those who want to make the most of a Symbian device's connectivity and photo functions. Amazingly the battery lasted more than a week between charges - even when recording streaming video. d2c66b5586
